Geek VS Nerd: The Showdown
Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you a story.
In a time long ago and a land far away, there was only one type of human being who co-existed in relative harmony with the rest of the world. It was simply because we knew no better. As technology developed and we became better equipped, the solid type split into three distinct ‘types’, like bacteria in a Petri dish, and the three new breeds of humans developed their own personality traits and facets, meaning that they would never be the same again.
"Did someone say 'Nerd'?"
To one far extreme you have the nerds, a tribe of people who tend to be introverted, fascinated with facts and a little socially inept. Your typical nerd is above average intelligence and is a person that other people come to for technical advice. A nerd would prefer to see The Matrix or Lord of the Rings at the cinema, for example. They might enjoy playing Chess or other strategy games, and don’t fret over the minor things, preferring to thing about the bigger picture. Think Stephen Hawking.
Listen out for a geek.
A geek on the other hand sits at the other site of the curve; a fan of gadgets and a lover of the ironic t-shirt, a geek is an early adopter of new technologies and likely to be very knowledgeable in one niche - particularly gaming or computers.
A selection of films favoured by geeks might be Anchorman (or anything with Will Ferrell) or Tron. A geek will also be prone to rocking out quotes from popular TV shows or doing the dance made famous by the character of David Brent in the Office.
Please note: There can be some movement between these two tribes; a nerd might become a geek as they socialise more, but it is very unlikely a geek will later become a nerd. Them’s the rules.
The third type of person falls into neither of these categories. People who are neither geeks nor nerds are more run on the mill, don’t tend to have any specific views on films or any trends in clothing choices, but tend to be a lot more socialised.
Here at I Spy HQ, we spend our days in front of computers. Sure, we are fairly social, but we wanted to conduct some research to find out the split of people in the office. As you can see, the results are to be expected from a digital agency. 62% of the team fall into the geek category (we will watch out for the dance moves!) while the next largest group is the ‘neithers’.
