How turning private eye can uncover great link sources

Organizations often underestimate the power of carrying out good competitor analysis and what can be gained from this. Granted it can be fairly time consuming and you don’t always know how useful the results of this will be….but when its good…its oh so good!

Competitive analysis may seem so obvious but a lot of people are not carrying it out properly. The benefits are relatively straight forward…you can see what your competitors are doing and often find out the cost.

The obvious way to go about this is to carry out competitor link mining. There are many tools out there which give you access to all the websites linking to your competitors, including blogs or forums and its generally pretty easy to tell if this is a paid advert or not. Naturally from this you can go through the list manually and see if any of the links would apply to your webpage and go after these. All you have to do is convince these websites that your content is just as good – if not better and that it is entirely relevant to their audience.

Making sure your link is significant to the blog or web guide is crucial. For example, if you are a car dealership and trying to link build for this, and you are trying to link to a fashion blog – this will not be very useful and you will not be targeting the right audience so they will not stay on your site.

Through this, you may find some decent blogs i.e. if you are link mining for a client who is a Hotel branch, you may find a range of travel blogs which are linking to them. They may be paying for this or it could be a link exchange or even just a free link in the form of a review. By carrying out the link mining, you will be able to tell, and depending on your strategy and budget you can take a similar approach to this in order to increase your number of links whilst maintaining the good quality of links that you want.

Open site Explorer is a good way to analyze your competitors links. It will give you the low down on their total links, page and domain authority. It also shows which links are nofollow links and what the anchor text is.

Link mining

Link mining is a low cost way of making sure you’re not missing out on any vital links that your competitors may have. It is crucial that you don’t just carry this out once and then just leave it as new links, namely higher value links may be added with time so its important to keep an eye out for these.
