Zuckerberg and Schmidt warn on over-regulation of web
Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google boss Eric Schmidt have warned governments worldwide not to over-regulate the internet.
Zuckerberg said governments cannot cherry pick which aspects of the web to control and which not to.
The two are leading a group of internet pioneers to the G8 summit in France.
The delegation will deliver recommendations thrashed out at the first e-G8 gathering in Paris this week.
Google makes plans for ‘wave and pay’ system
Google has joined the race to offer consumers the chance to leave their wallet at home and instead use their mobile phone to make payments.
At a joint press conference at its New York offices, Google, Citibank and Mastercard on Thursday unveiled plans to turn the company’s Android mobile handset phone into Google Wallet, complete with an app that lets users make “wave and pay” purchases in stores.
Instead of swiping a card, customers will be able to wave their phone in front of a reader to make the payment. Initially, only high-end Citibank customers will be able to use the adapted phones, which will be linked directly to their credit or debit cards.
Trials start immediately and Google predicts the service will officially launch this summer in San Francisco and New York City, followed by a roll-out nationwide.
Israeli couple name baby Like.
An Israeli couple have named their baby daughter Like, taking inspiration from the Facebook social networking site, Israeli media report.
Lior Adler and his wife Vardit said they were looking for a name that was “modern and innovative”.
Like Adler’s father said originality was a key factor in the choice and said he had checked no-one else in Israel had the same name.
“In our opinion it’s the modern equivalent of the name Ahava [Love],” he said, according to Israeli newspaper Maariv.
