Forget the Oscars - We have the Appy Awards!

The red carpet is rolled out, black ties and designer ball gowns on show. The night sky is adorned with the flashing lights of the paparazzi cameras. Too big to be the Baftas…too glamorous to be the Oscars. No, it can only mean one thing….

Yes, that’s right it’s the 2011 Appy awards!

The night of April 11th 2011, saw the who’s who of the Smartphone world descending to Vinopolis, South London for the first official Appy award ceremony.

The “Appy’s” are about acknowledging extraordinary mobile applications and their impact on the lives of the consumers. With the abundance of Smartphone users, this is actually a very relevant awards ceremony. Apps are big business, with 350,000 on offer from Apple, 200,000 for Google’s Android operating system, 65,000 from Nokia and 11,000 for Windows. If you take into account that Apple has paid over £1.2 billion to developers in the last 18 months, you can start to grasp the enormity of this channel.

More than 30,000 people voted for 50 apps nominated across 10 categories. So want to know who won? No big surprises…

Well done to Angry Birds for grabbing two awards. For those of you not in the know, Angry Birds is a game which lets users launch birds at pigs with a slingshot with the aim of destroying all the pigs on the playing field. Sounds silly, is silly, but what fun! The game was developed in 2009 by Finland-based development company Rovio.

The Appy awards were organised by Carphone Warehouse, and it is very likely to be an annual event. If this becomes the case, then I guess I will have to disappoint Eva Green as I won’t be attending the 2012 Oscars for risk of not being on top form for the Appy’s!
