Recycle and Get the Most Out of Your Content

If you’ve been involved in Natural Search (SEO) for any time now, you’ll be familiar with the term “Content is King”. It’s true and will long continue to be.

People will argue there was a new King in town with the advent of the importance of links in helping your pages rank - and so for some time it’s been widely argued about who does in fact wear the trousers when it comes to ranking factors.

Quick answer? Links win hands down in terms of ranking power - but without great content, you’re missing out on so many high quality and completely voluntary links!

So for this post I decided to show you just how to get the most out of your content. However, you need to be committed to go the extra mile - and that means have great content to begin with.

With that in mind - let’s begin…

Video

If you want to get the most mileage out of your content I cannot stress enough the importance of video.

Video in it’s own right can rank for search terms and appear directly in search results (optimising video warrants a dedicated post). A search for “Vauxhall warranty” below highlights just how video can aid you in traffic generation and brand awareness.

Where possible if you can start with video you have a great opportunity to recycle this content for extra reach and extra coverage.

Audio

Now that you have your video content, there is the opportunity to utilise the audio element. If the audio can be stripped out from the video - you have your very own Podcast! Of course, the audio would need to make sense if it were to be heard without viewing the video, but usually you’ll find that stripping the audio will serve as a great standalone format.

There are plenty of Podcast channels and directories that you can distribute your audio to and these channels also have the possibility to rank in their own right. Some examples include Podbean and of course iTunes.

Text

So you have your video, you have successfully stripped out the audio, why not now get the audio transcribed and turned into text format?

Full transcription can play a great role in helping give textual relevance to a video that is embedded on your site and also serves as an alternative way of digesting the information to those who prefer text or are unable to view the video.

Within the text transcript there is opportunity to deliver relevant keywords, as well as allow you to link internally to relevant pages that support the written content.

Something else powerful with the transcript is that Google has long been able to understand the audio within video with YouTube allowing you to add subtitles to your videos. If you allow YouTube to do this automatically you’ll notice the results are pretty good - proving this data is usable in terms of relevance and ranking.

Why not use your new transcript to add to the video on YouTube too?

Images

Got some great imagery from your video? Why not utilise this further by uploading a great selection of images to photo sharing sites such as Flickr?

You can in turn optimise these images further with tags, descriptions, and titles which lends further to more chance for ranking for search terms and within the universal results in the search engines.

PDFs/PowerPoint Presentations

Remember that text that was created via the audio stripped from your video?

Why not put the text and great selection of images into a PDF or PowerPoint presentation?

These can be uploaded to services such as Slideshare which receives a lot of traffic in it’s own right but also has a lot of ranking power. Much like the photos you have uploaded, you can add relevant tags, titles, and descriptions to your files in order to help further with the possibility of ranking.

In Closing

What you’ll notice, is that all of the platforms you can distribute your content to are highly trustworthy to the search engines. There are plenty of opportunities to garner links from these platforms too. (remember - without great content your link opportunities are slimmed down)

Also if you cannot create video from the offset - don’t think this post isn’t for you. There should be plenty of other formats of content you already have at your disposal to recycle in a similar way.

Remember - create great content and get it out there. After all, it deserves to be seen by your audience.
